A long time has past since 2 April 2016 when she technically qualified for the 4 x 400m relay team in Rio, but tonight the wait was finally over for Jessica Thornton. Tonight she became an Olympian. Of course, she would have loved to have competed in the individual event, but at just 18 years of age being part of the Australian Olympic Team in any capacity is a dream come true.
Selected as the lead runner she handed over to Annaliese Rubie in third place. From lane 1 that was a magnificent effort. The team finished 4th in the heat but made the final ranked 8th on time.
So not only did she become an Olympian tonight but she made her first Olympic final. Every member of that team played their part and to get a season best time was just fantastic.
When asked how she felt, Jessica simply said, “I’ve made a flippin’ final. How good is that.”
Here’s cheers to Australia and congratulations young lady.
